Reproductions of Old Masters

George Havrillay had two primary aims in reproducing these great works; to offer potential buyers the opportunity to own a real oil painting instead of a print, and to learn the brush techniques of the some of the great masters (of which he said Turner was the most difficult to copy). He was also fascinated by the business of forgeries, so later signed his own reproductions with his name. George documented the time he spent on each of these works, often over 120 hours. Even as "copies", these paintings are all magnificent.

Turner: Canale Grande

1993

Reproduction oil painting by George Havrillay. "After J. W. Turner Canale Grande" (bottom left). Of all the reproductions George created, he admitted that this was among the most difficult because of Turner's distinctive brush technique. AUD$2900-
