Based in Heidelburg, Germany after World War 2, George Havrillay worked for the occupying US Special Military Forces as a clerk and translator. He would have relished opportunities to put his love of illustration and cartooning to work in newsletters and poster art.

A huge portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created for her first visit to Melbourne as our reigning monarch in early 1954. George Havrillay got permission to display his work prominently where he was employed. This was along the route she would take down Ballarat Road in Melbourne's west.

Original painting by George Havrillay. George had hoped to publish an illustrated book on the game of Chess. This was one of the illustrations he decided to paint in larger scale.
