World of Music Arts & Dance had its first festival in 1982, and was programmed with a mix of pop acts and non-western music that the founders were obviously enthusiastic about sharing. In accepting a relevant award in 2015, Peter Gabriel said "Our dream was not to sprinkle world music around a rock festival, but to prove that these great artists could be headliners in their own right."
I'll be reminiscing about the great WOMAD performances over the years, with a taste of the live album from 1982 being re-released this week for the 40th anniversary.
