Trumpetist Jon Hassell (22 March 1937 - 26 June 2021) created a style of music he described as Fourth World, a distinctive hybrid of music both ancient and digital, composed and improvised, Eastern and Western. His seminal albums ranged from glitchy oblique electronica to serene ambient jazz. His lifelong quest was to transform his trumpet playing to reference the vocal mastery of the Hindustani raga master, Pandit Pran Nath.
Armenian-born Djivan Gasparyan (12 Oct 1928 - 6 July 2021) passed on his skills and musical wisdom to many of his students. He played the duduk, the traditional oboe of Armenia, which is mostly played in pairs with one providing a seamless continuous drone. Djivan came to our attention outside his homeland through his collaborations with Michael Brook, Sting and Peter Gabriel.
