So... after more than 22 years, Continental Drift is back on air. If you were living near Melbourne in the 1990's, you might have heard this program on PBS on Sunday night. I've chosen to keep the program name because it's still entirely apt for what I like to present on radio, only now the program will reflect how my taste has developed over the intervening years.
My aim is to share high quality music from anywhere in the world, with no borders or cultural boundaries to limit the scope. The term "World Music" makes me uncomfortable. It was adopted by the marketing machine to describe anything obviously non-western in origin. I relished the late Miriam Makeba once rebuking a journalist for using it in a question to her. She questioned whether the term implied "Third World Music", and insisted that from her point of view, the music of her country (South Africa) was just music, their music. Percussionist Hossam Ramzy echoed her sentiments when I had the opportunity to ask him about it in 1996.
