After wading through copious cover notes about an intriguing new compilation called "Saturno 2000", I decided that the gist of its story surrounds the sondieros who are sound-system operators. After a couple of accidents with dysfunctional technology that unintentionally slowed down the replay of pirated cumbia cassettes, they discovered that people really liked the slower tempos. This subsequent deliberate "transformation" became know as rebejada. The sondieros sourced music from all over South America and brought it to Mexico, and DJ Lengua (aka Eamon Ore-Giron) has put this amazing compilation together for the Analogue Africa label.
Another great new compilation from the not-for-profit Wantok Music organisation highlights the diversity of music in Oceania.
Brazilian hybrid rock, Afro-Brazilian bass culture, indigenous voices and water security all have a say in this program.
I'm also able share a wonderful performance from Gippsland guitarist Christopher Wood, recorded live-to-air back in 1988 in the studios of PBS 106.7FM in Melbourne.
