(The Boîte - Australian acappella) [Sandstock]

I FAGIOLINI & the SDASA Chorale .... UK & South Africa
(a) Vela! - Come! 2'39
(b) Libera Nos (by John Sheppard) 2'46
(Simunye) [Detour]
An unusual combination of hymns, early music and traditional Zulu songs. The integration of the groups is not so evident. Rather, the album alternates between genres. The most interesting collaboration is the song (see below) of an English hymn by John Clements arranged to integrate both the English and Zulu versions.

Paolo MODUGNO .... Italy
Discesa negl'inferi 1'53
(Trance) [Robi Droli / Newtone]

Various GNAWA musicians from MARRAKESH .... Morocco
Greens 11'15
(Trance) [Robi Droli / Newtone]
This comes originally from a CD (Songs for Sidi Mimoun) that features the main repertoire of four of the seven main "suites" in the Gnawa ceremony, as well as the opening which I have not heard before.

Steve ROACH, Michael STEARNS, Ron SUNSINGER .... USA
East Kiva 13'38
(Kiva) [Fathom - Hearts of Space]

The Bulgarian Voices ANGELITE & HUUN-HUUR-TU .... Bulgaria / Tuva
Mountain Story 10'16
(Fly, Fly My Sadness) [Shanachie]
A fabulous combination of cultures, and mostly fine contemporary compositions like this one from Mikhail ALPERIN.

(a) SEQUENTIA ENSEMBLE .... Germany
O Vis Aeteritatis 7'54
(Siren Song) [ABC Music]
A piece by Hildegard von Bingen

MACEDONIAN WOMENS CHOIR .... Australia

No Night There - Akukho ubusuku le! 4'05

An English hymn by John Clements arranged to integrate both the English and Zulu versions.

Halima CHEDLI Ensemble .... Morocco
Mulana 8'00
(Morocco: Crossroads of Time) [Ellipsis Arts]
You will find more from this womens group on the TRANCE 2 disc on the same label

NIGHT SPIRIT MASTERS ....Morocco
Hamouda 5'57
(Gnawa Music of Marrakesh) [Axiom]

Maleem Mahmoud GHANIA & Ensemble, with Pharoah SANDERS .... Morocco / USA
(a) Bala Moussaka 3'52
(b) Peace in Essaouira - For Sonny Sharrock 7'23
(The Trance of Seven Colours) [Axiom]
The second of these pieces is quite serene material from Mr. Sanders who plays some very wild stuff on this album. I sometimes feel that he should have spent more effort listening to and responding directly to Ghania's ensemble. To me, this is the only recipe for making a fusion of this kind work 100 percent.

Rafat MISSO & Hossam RAMZY ....Egypt / UK
Sallam Allay - My Beloved Greeted Me 5'19
(Ahlamy) [ARC Music]
Ever heard a quarter-tone saxophone? I love it when a talented person can effortlessly make an instrument do something it was never really designed to do.
