Music from the Islands of Roti and Lombok
This website is about two independently-produced CDs of music from the islands of Roti and Lombok in Eastern Indonesia Troubled Grass and Crying Bamboo: The Music of Roti and Be Not Afraid to Strike the Gong: The Music of Lombok; it includes introductory notes on the music cultures of Roti and Lombok, photographs of the performers, mp3 audio samples, a streaming audio soundscape, and video clips.
Both recordings were produced in collaboration with the performers and profits from their sale are shared equally between the producer and the artists. Please read more information about how and why these recordings were produced, and contact us with your comments.
- Roti CD Troubled Grass and Crying Bamboo: The Music of Roti
features four different performers of poetic song accompanied by sasandu tube zither, two meko gong and drum ensembles, and a soundscape collage of natural and man-made sounds from Roti.
Includes a 24-page booklet with notes, song texts, translations, and 14 colour photos (61:16).

- Lombok CD Be Not Afraid to Strike the Gong: The Music of Lombok features a sixteen-member gong Sasak group accompanying dance, procession and martial arts, a nine-member wayang Sasak group accompanying the shadow puppet play, and a nine-member rebana tuned-drum group performing celebratory music.
Includes a 20-page booklet with notes and 16 colour photos (61:29).
